Grammar / Notes

  • 〜てから (after doing) attaches to the て-form and means ‘after doing X’: the action before it is completed first, and the main clause follows. (“After the bird went outside, I closed the window.”)
  • 〜ています (state) With some verbs such as , or , describes an ongoing state rather than an action in progress. (“Because the window is open, it is very cold.”)
  • 〜から (because) at the end of a clause gives the reason for what follows: ‘because A, B’. The reason clause comes first and may end in the polite form. (“Because the window is open, it is very cold.”)

English

The Classroom Window and the Bird

In the morning, I am in the school classroom.
Because the window is open, it is very cold.
I go to close the window.
But there is a small bird near the window, so I am waiting quietly.
After the bird went outside, I closed the window.
I talked with my friend, saying, ‘It’s warm, isn’t it?’ and ‘Thank goodness.’
