Grammar / Notes

  • 〜たいです (want to) attaches to the verb stem (the ます-form without ) to say what the speaker wants to do; the negative is . (“I said to that person, ‘I want to see the panda.’”)
  • 〜と言いいます (say that) reports what someone says, and marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“I said to that person, ‘I want to see the panda.’”)
  • 〜から (because) at the end of a clause gives the reason for what follows: ‘because A, B’. The reason clause comes first and may end in the polite form. (“Because I only saw a photo of the panda, I was a little sad.”)

English

The Zoo’s Panda

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the zoo alone.
In front of the panda’s room, there was a zoo staff member.
I said to that person, “I want to see the panda.”
But, that person said, “The panda returned to China last week.”
Because I only saw a photo of the panda, I was a little sad.
Next year, I want to go to China.
