Grammar / Notes
- 〜つもりです (intend to) Dictionary form + つもりです states a plan or an intention: what someone means to do. 午後二時半、私は公園にいて、三時に入口で友達と会うつもりでした。(“At 2:30 p.m., I was in a park and intended to meet my friend at the entrance at three.”)
- Adjectives as adverbs (〜く / 〜に) An adjective describes a verb by changing its ending: an i-adjective replaces い with く (いい becomes よく) and a na-adjective takes に, as in 早く and 静かに. 私は早く入口へ行って、三時に友達に会いました。(“I quickly went to the entrance and met my friend at three.”)
- 〜と言います (say that) 〜と言います reports what someone says, and と marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in 「」 keeps the speaker’s original wording. 困って、公園にいた女の人に「すみません、時間を教えてください」と言いました。(“Feeling troubled, I said to a woman in the park, “Excuse me, please tell me the time.””)
