Grammar / Notes

  • 〜から (because) at the end of a clause gives the reason for what follows: ‘because A, B’. The reason clause comes first and may end in the polite form. (“Next week is my friend’s birthday, so I went to buy a book as a present.”)
  • どちら / どれ (which) asks which of two things is …; asks which of three or more. The answer takes too. (“I asked the clerk, ‘Which book is popular?’”)
  • 〜と言いいます (say that) reports what someone says, and marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“The clerk said, ‘The photo book is popular. It is very beautiful.’”)

English

Which Book?

On Sunday, I went to a bookstore.
Next week is my friend’s birthday, so I went to buy a book as a present.
Both the travel book and the photo book looked good.
I asked the clerk, ‘Which book is popular?’
The clerk said, ‘The photo book is popular. It is very beautiful.’
My friend also likes photos, so I bought that book.
