Grammar / Notes

  • て-form linking actions The て-form joins two actions in order: X、Y means ‘do X and then Y’. Only the last verb carries the tense and the politeness. (“After hearing my name, the person took out a small box.”)
  • 〜と言いいます (say that) reports what someone says, and marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“The person at the convenience store said, “What is your name?””)
  • 〜から (because) at the end of a clause gives the reason for what follows: ‘because A, B’. The reason clause comes first and may end in the polite form. (“Because the box was small, I asked, “Is this my package?””)

English

The Small Package

On Wednesday evening, I went to the convenience store to pick up a package.
The person at the convenience store said, “What is your name?”
I said, “I’m Kai Nakayama.”
After hearing my name, the person took out a small box.
Because the box was small, I asked, “Is this my package?”
The person looked at the name on top of the box and said, “Yes, it is.”
