Grammar / Notes

  • 〜と言いいます (say that) reports what someone says, and marks the reported content. An indirectly reported clause normally takes the plain form. A direct quotation in keeps the speaker’s original wording. (“I asked a colleague who had come to the meeting. They said, “You’re right, this clock is slow.””)

English

The Meeting Room Clock

On Friday morning, I am in the company meeting room.
The meeting starts at ten o’clock, but the meeting room clock says nine fifty-nine.
However, my watch already says one minute past ten.
I thought the meeting room clock was slow.
I asked a colleague who had come to the meeting. They said, “You’re right, this clock is slow.”
The colleague fixed the clock, so we felt relieved and started the meeting.
