Grammar / Notes

  • 〜だけ and counters after a noun or a counter means ‘only’. A counter such as , or gives a number of things and usually stands right before the verb. (“I wanted to see the cat, just for a little while, so I went outside.”)
  • 〜と思おもいます (I think) expresses an opinion or belief. The clause before takes the plain form. In the affirmative non-past, nouns and na-adjectives normally take before . (“Cats sometimes come to the garden, so I thought that animal was a cat too.”)

English

A Black Cat in the Garden?

At night, I saw a black animal in the garden.
Cats sometimes come to the garden, so I thought that animal was a cat too.
I wanted to see the cat, just for a little while, so I went outside.
I said, “Kitty, come here,” but the animal did not come.
When I turned on the garden light, it was my old black shoe.
Because it wasn’t a cat, it was a little funny.
