  • 〜が (but) between two clauses means ‘but’ and joins two contrasting ideas into one sentence. The first clause usually ends in the polite form. (“Maria has seen those kanji many times, but she does not know how to read them.”)

Difficult Kanji

At the university, Maria found a piece of paper on the desk.
On that paper was a name written in difficult kanji.
Maria has seen those kanji many times, but she does not know how to read them.
She asked the student next to her, “How do you read this?”
The student laughed and said, “It’s my name.”
Maria said, “Oh, I see. Thank you.”
